Oh no, they weren't too fond of it before they even released it as a single. The guitar riff "DUHDUH.. DUHDUH" was Johnny Greenwood pretty much trying to wreck the song he felt was too quiet and didn't much care for (ironically creating it's defining sound). It was pretty much a throwaway song they had in thier repretoire that the record execs went OH THAT'S GOTTA BE A SINGLE $$$$$ when they didn't really like anything else.

National Anthem is my favorite radiohead song =( I am sad that you dislike it so much!
This thread is filled with so much bad energy, I was just going to stay away, but I had to say two things: No matter how much I adore Radiohead, I would never put them at the level of the Beatles. Musically, I personally think they are at the Beatles' level (and exceed them on some counts), mostly because technology allows them to more concisely express themselves. But the Beatles were by and far more influential and important in music. And I don't think Radiohead is AS mainstream as some of you guys claim...I go to a state school with a population of 40,000 and I've met a fair number of people who've never heard a single Radiohead song. Which is fine, but then most of the people I've also met that "listen to Radiohead" know like...Creep. And that's it. One song doesn't make the band mainstream, especially when there's so much more to the band than that one song.

I'll bet you if you resurrected all the Beatles and had them fight Radiohead to the death...
it'd be hilarious. |

I find that the majority of people simply listen to the radio and if the artist hasn't made an ass of themselves (50 Cent, Fergie, Brittany Spears, etc etc) they don't really follow music even if the artists are wildly popular. You'd think everyone knows who Weezer is for instance, but a surprising number of people I've talked to simply give me a blank stare when I as them if they prefer the blue album or the green album.

Why is it that when I say something is better than something else, it's automatically taken to mean that I hate the something else? I mean, just in a critique of composition, "Creep" is a complete song with actual changes while "The National Anthem" is basically just a 5-minute vamp, but that doesn't mean it isn't an enjoyable vamp to listen to and it makes up for a lot of its faults with high energy and a good conveyance of mood.

This is the internewt. You either orgasm over something or are plotting it's demise. There is no middle ground. It is a land of extreme extremes.
The internet is serious business.
