As far as i understand it the first/second episodes are supposed to be the weakest (I guess as is generally the case with most TV series)

I think the reason it's so popular is 'cause the animation style lends itself to gifs/memes. And I guess because it's "ironic" to watch children's shows now. I can't take it seriously and await its downfall in popularity.
