I just assumed it was Black Mage being ignorant of White Magics more non-healy aspects. Like Holy. And Ruse. And Holy. And Dia. And Holy.

And/or a reference to older games having bosses with so much HP a cure spell would cause rollover, and thus massive damage (Okay, maybe it's just the SUPER SECRET BOSS in Lufia 2, but I think the final boss of MQ had this as well, since Cure only hurt him once >.>)
