I watched Another until the deaths started happening and I came to the conclusion that maybe I would have continued watching that turd if said happenings had happened like way before. As it is Another's opening act is only beaten in its meandering by

Hey, hey. Did I really? I don't know, I've been on cryogenesis for like three years.
Also at least Eureka Seven had the radical air-surfing robots. Another just has a ghost girl with an eyepatch. Quote:

If you can't appreciate a slow buildup capped off with someone getting
umbrella'd through the neck
then I just don't even know what to say.

Well sure, if you are in for the shock value, but the first three episodes of Another do nothing to make you care about any of the people who are getting offed. When I say meandering I mean time-wasting in the worst sense. There's a lot of atmosphere-building but very little of characterisation, even for the protagonist. Glasses-girl dying was shocking because of how gruesome it was, not because of any aspects regarding her personality or association to the main cast. She was literally conceptualised to die, and that sort of thing just rubs me the wrong way.
One example I do wanna bring up is how a lot of time is spent on constructing the mystery behind Mei as something scary and incredible and relevant to the town's core. Episode two even ends with a promise to at least clarify some aspect of that intrigue -and is immediately picked up by showing a differently-coloured eye. It's cliché and very tedious, especially with a cartoon that already takes its sweet time to have its characters do anything. I will admit that I haven't watched anything beyond episode three. As far as I know it may have become the bee's knees, but it did leave a very tiresome first impression on me. Re: the Eureka Seven thing: I think there's an excuse to make for fifty-episode animu to unravel itself at a slower pace than twelve-episode animu. I'm just going to say that you completely misunderstand the point of the genre and leave it at that.

Eh. I think Another is okay, but I picked it up for a silly reason I saw a gif of the 2 leads dancing in class with everyone ignoring them, how could I NOT pick it up after that but so far, what amounts to Final Destination in Japan, but not completely rock stupid is actually alright by me.
Edit: damnit karesh, I was trying NOT to spoil that part. Edit2: Because it comes the fuck outta nowhere and is hilarious when you don't expect it. Edit3: I concede, well played good sir. Last edited by Ramary; 02-18-2012 at 12:25 PM. |

Which is the best episode. Edit: Oh spoil what, they dance. Big whoop. Edit2: If we went by what you want you'd never have watched the show to begin with because nobody would have posted that gif. Edit3: Victory Shazbot

I'm thinking one of the main reasons to watch Another is to be completely surprised at the deaths. While also trying to figure out the when. I have been scarily good at guessing that the past two episodes.
I do like that this show seems very, very aware of horror movie mysteries: To the point where in episode 5 someone decides to be helpful to the protag, says "I will help you", and then immediate dies from a fucking heart attack. From merely saying they will actually be helpful and explain shit. I dunno about you, but that bit was absolutely fantastic. |
