I assume the saving throw had to be made by the dragon that the spell branched from, since V said it would kill ALL direct relatives and those once-removed.

Considering we saw it handily dispose of 25% of the world's Black Dragons when it was first cast, I seriously doubt Girard and his family would have fared any better.
