I liked FF9, but I also played the first eight beforehand. There is a whole lot in that game that you're just not gonna get unless you've seen the others, and that was one of the things I liked best about it. I coulda done without having to steal unique items from every boss though...

Actually, I prefer 2 in a lot of ways. Like in the way where I actually got to wield the frelling Sword of Mana in 2 where 3 just fucking teased me with it. Anyway, if you don't like one of them, the other probably won't do it for you.
