I liked FF9, but I also played the first eight beforehand. There is a whole lot in that game that you're just not gonna get unless you've seen the others, and that was one of the things I liked best about it. I coulda done without having to steal unique items from every boss though...

Honestly, I don't even see a need for the puzzles - I rarely bother to go past the free-roaming title screen (although I have finished most of the action levels and a good chunk of the puzzle levels). It's just FUN, and the premise is awesome. Bought it very shortly after it came out, and I haven't regretted it. I try new things all the time, and I've never run out of shit to mess around with. Seriously though, 3 has some of the gameplay quirks worked out, and is vastly superior in terms of graphics. It's also more open ended in that you have a lot of different protagonists to choose from with different playstyles. However, it still plays basically the same as Secret of Mana. Actually, I prefer 2 in a lot of ways. Like in the way where I actually got to wield the frelling Sword of Mana in 2 where 3 just fucking teased me with it. Anyway, if you don't like one of them, the other probably won't do it for you.

Okay okay, I quit. Next time I'll bash on Super Mario RPG. Funny that you say this considering I'm more of an old Square fan. |

I've heard this argument before, mostly from Azisen, but even with that in mind the movement controls and godawful physics engine are teeth-pullingly painful.
