Amtgard!

Hey! I've played this fun game with my brother, and I was wondering if anyone else has played this before? Or are me and my brother just freaks? Anyways, post your thoughts and questions about Amtgard here.

Actually, if you don't know about this, Amtgard has been around for 21 years, and has chapters in Japan, Russia, Germany, and...Croatia? Anyways, I've been playing it for about 10 months now, though I've been aware of it's existence for about a year longer than that. I am currently the Chancellor here at our chapter, the Shire of Cage Valley. Feel free to ask me a question about Amtgard. I will try to answer as best I can.

Amtgard, to put it simply, is a LARP, or Live Action Role Play. It's basically a game of medieval recreation, mostly battle recreation, with some RP thrown in the mix. Anything else you want to know, or would you like a deeper explination?

You should try wearing the "Jesus Saves. The rest take damage" shirt around in public. You get so many double looks and questions that it's sometimes not worth it.

Geek apparel rocks. I'm also, at least occaisionally, involved in Amtgard. I play a healer, though more swashbuckling than the norm...I'm trying to put together a decent Red Mage costume, which is proving itself to require more time, money, and sewing skills than I currently, or may ever, posess.

Anyway, you take on a different persona, there are character classes, you level up, you wear fun costumes, and there are sometimes big events where everyone is in-character from the moment they walk in, all weekend long. The main focus, though, is on combat. It is a combat game, with padded weapons and shields, and a fairly comprehensive set of rules to make sure no one gets too horribly maimed. All in all, a pretty nifty diversion on a Sunday afternoon.

You think that gets odd looks try to LARP Star Trek in the park, any time near sunset, out here some gang bangers could color trip off the uniforms.

Better yet go out in Uniform arround town and don't use fake rank if you have not earned it in game don't add pips for NG or stripes for TOS.

It's like people are afraid of bright colors.

edit: one of my favorite moments was when someone, who I didn't know had gone out of character, asked where one of his friends was. I said on the planet it got allot of stares from kids trying to fly kites.

Actually, I already knew that. Me and my brother don't belong to any chapter, we just play it in our backyard with the local kids (heh heh, almost feel sorry for them). I don't have any rank, but my brother is a 6th level anti-paladine wielding a poison sword.
