One Man's Chronicle Into Madness
We've had a few Twilight bashing threads, but not a chronicle. Though Sarah Connor had a chronicle, and look where that got her.
I have a young, teenage sister. Being a girl, and also being between the ages of eleven to twenty-nine, she has a thing for the strung-out stink bomb known as Robert Pattinson - or, as many others (dreamily) refer to him, "Edward." After numerous... "observations" and "critiques," I was told by the folks that I wasn't allowed to do so until I actually read the book. So I bought it today. The first few pages are sort of what I expected - sort of middle-school level writing, too over descriptive without detailing anything of importance. So I thought I'd go by every few chapters and we can talk, ending with a "strongly worded" review that will give me a few jibes to let loose 'round Christmas break when I head home. Who's with me? (If the mods aren't with me, and feel that Twilight doesn't warrant another thread, feel free to close this.) |

I'd grab my sister's copy and join with you in this journey but...sheesh, man, are you a masochist or something? It can't be worth it!

Are you gonna tell us what your reading plan is so we can join in? Because I kinda feel like testing the depths of my tolerance.

Might be fun, I'd be in for it, as my mother happened upon two of the books at a yard sale and decided to get them "for me" (I try to avoid talking to her much)

I don't understand the continual shelling of Twilight. Ok some people like a book you don't like. I guarantee I can find someone who would say all the same things you say about Twilight about whatever your favourite book is.

"The private sexual fantasies and unconscious propaganda of a dangerously religious woman, seeking an outlet for her feelings of frustration and bitterness about marrying too young; feelings she transparently has no understanding of herself. Oh, and the writing stinks on every level from plot to characterization to basic grasp pf English and even spelling. The fact that it's been bought by professional publishers feels like an insult to aspiring writers everywhere, let alone that people choose to read it."
Yeah, you might be able to say that about any given book. I don't know if it would be true though. I personally have no problem with Twilight's fans, at least not since their attempted founding of a religion based on 58 badly spelled words of scripture seems to have gone nowhere. It's just a truly, madly, deeply hilarious set of books to make fun of.

Alright, it's 2:05 in the AM as I'm posting this (check the timestap, it should be your timezone I think?) so I guess since I can head to the coffee shop in town tomorrow after I run a few errands and just chill out for a bit, I'll do five chapters and post them at five pee-em tomorrow. Anyone who wants to join me, go for it.

No, this is not an argument I feel like having.

However, personally, stuff like Twilight being popular upsets me as it's a symptom of a larger problem, the larger problem being that too many damn people have no taste, at least from my perspective. I personally believe that the quality of things can be objectively gauged, at least to a certain degree, and those things which I consider to be lacking in quality and value becoming more popular than other, better things is incredibly frustrating to me. I don't really think we need another thread for it, because at this point it's beating a dead horse. The people who hate Twilight will hate Twilight and the people who love it will love it. No side will ever give in to the other, regardless of any valid argument either makes.

As for the poularity book thing this has been in existence for ever. I can't think of any books that are now considered to be great that were best-sellers in their time. Bitching about Twilight isn't going to change anything. TLDR version: Every book sucks. Let people read what makes them happy. Last edited by Professor Smarmiarty; 11-26-2009 at 07:00 AM. |
