MF DOOM
Just remember, all caps when you spell the man's name.
I can't believe I've never made a thread about my favoritest of favorite rappers. I'm very much ashamed of myself. Feel free to throw apples at me. But BEFORE YOU DO! Allow me to enlighten you on this most fantastic of Rhyme-masters. MF DOOM is an underground, alternative rapper named Daniel Dumile who performs under the persona of a masked supervillain. His music is known for it's unique flow, the unusual beats he produces himself(his production is also a point of distinction), and his eschewing of the traditional verse-hook-chorus-repeat format, opting instead to rhyme a single, continuous verse on each song. The lyrics use a variety of metaphors and concepts in each song, and the persona often shines through in the music. One of the most interesting things about MF DOOM is his actual story, which plays out like every supervillain origin story you've ever heard. HE EVEN HAS AN ALLITERATIVE NAME! Dumile was part of the well known(in hip-hop circles for all you geeks) Hip-Hop trio KMD as Zev-Love X with his younger brother DJ Subrock and a third member, first rapper Rodan, and Later a different member Known as Onyx the Birthstone kid. KMD was one of the Many Five Percent Nation Rap Groupsto come out in the early nineties, the most well known and influential being the Wu-tang clan. So, we have a little starting point. He was a member of a political rap group in the early days of hip-hop, and also an Esoteric afro-centric Nation of Islam Offshoot religion. Lot's of quirky things happening in his past. Cut ahead to 1993. DJ Subroc has died. Elektra Records has refused to Release KMD's Latest Album Black Bastards due to their religious afiliation, the racially candid lyrical content of some of the songs, and the cover art. KMD is finished. Dumile sinks into a deep depression and becomes homeless, wandering the streets of New York. He drops off the radar completely. 1998. Nuyorican Poet's Cafe: A Strange MC begins dominating Open Mic Night and Freestyle Events. He always wears a stocking mask and never reveals his face. He calls himself MF DOOM. From there, DOOM has gone on to produce numerous great songs, beats, rhymes, and collaborations. He has even developed two other identities for several concept albums. Viktor Vaughn: Viktor Vaughn Is a Gadgeteer teenager who travels through time. Viktor Vaughn, oddly, shows his face more than Doom, usually going with hoodies and sunglasses. King Gheedorah: part of his time as the Monster Island Czars. King Gheedorah is a monster who wishes to destroy the world. In addition, When Dumile collaborates with other artists, the albums are usually named in some combination of both his and the other artist's name. examples being: Madvillain:A collaboration with West Coast Producer Madlib. Dangerdoom: A collaboration with British producer Danger Mouse, who's most well known for his work on The Gorillaz albums.
