8-bit theater; the game?!
Suppose that a 8-bit Theater game was going to be made, that it would have the same look-and-feel of the older Final Fantasy titles by Squaresoft and obviously, be a RPG. A lot of stuff wouldn't be decided yet. What would you, the average 8BT fan, would like to see in it?
I'm just curious to see what you'd come with... :rmage: I haven't told Brian about it yet, but if he reads this paragraph he'll probably know anyway (Hi Brian!) but I've been working on an RPG engine in flash for a while, trying to make it as close as possible in style as popular early rpg games such as Dragon Quest and of course, FF (read: I put efforts into it). I may be an awesome programmer but I lack originality to make a successful story for a RPG, and since I'm such a hardcore fan of 8BT, I thought maybe the Great Brian Clevinger would accept to sponsor it with a nice script in exchange of an addictive game and yet more publicity. That's just a maybe of course...

I'm going to assume you know 8-bit is loosely based on the original final fantasy.
At least several people have attempted to make an 8-bit game in the past, and most of the attempts failed. I don't believe a working complete game was ever finished, but I might be wrong. You could get advice from people who have been involved with the projects in the past. |

And yes, I know 8-bit is loosely based on the original final fantasy. But that doesn't make a 8-bit Theater game less... make-able... I fail to get your point actually... unless you mean a 8BT game is doomed to failure the moment it's mentioned, but I've seen a few attempts at RPG games in flash and it literally made me throw up for lack of efforts put into it so yeah. What principally makes a good game is the storyline and the playability of the system. Of course, if those two utterly suck, it's free blam points... EDIT: I edited my first post, if that makes it any clearer.

I'm just saying, its been attempted in the past, so don't get your hopes up terribly, and its doubtful anyone might be too excited. Its not a particularly original idea, and the past attempts have failed, if I recall correctly. Maybe yours will succeed, but the last few attempts, again, I might be wrong about this, have been met with something approaching slight hostility or disdain.
Or maybe it was the person who was doing it specifically, I don't recall. Just saying, don't get your hopes up, and don't expect many people to be excited or ready to chip in. Edit: Ah, I now realize you weren't asking for help. Sorry, I'm tired. |

The main problem that I see in creating a game based off of 8-Bit, as genious as it is, it is based of a game. So you see what I mean, basing a game of off a comic based of a game is not really going to work. I know that 8-Bit takes a lot of creative liberties, but it all depends on how you plan on what type of game you want it to be. If it's a game that's just for shits and giggles than I suppose it might work, you could have some of 8-Bits jokes in there with minimal (Or more!) animations. If you intend it to be more of a long game than I think it would be quite a bit harder. As was said before me though, all the known knock-off games from 8-Bit have failed, unless there is one I'm not aware off. I'm not trying to persuade you against it, just letting you know the problems I see with it. If you get one to work and it's fun, awesome! I just hope you have some time on your hands and a lot of patience to get it right.

You could just make a romhack that changes some characters and text.
I don't really know how romhacks work, though, so it may be easier said than done.

By the way, could anyone actually answer the original question, now that we all know what happened to the previous attempts?!

The only thing I ever seen thet was both game and 8-Bit related(other than FF) was a mod for...
Little Fighter 2. I made myself a BM with all the stabbing and hadoken stuff(it was before the class change). I would like to see a point&click adventure game with FF like combat. That Would allow to give both fighting and "good" jokes. |

I dunno, I think the original turn-based system could work. That being said, I think it'd be hilarious if this was dressed up as a boss battle:

I think 8BT would make a better kart racer or fighter (puntended).
