Did Kamina just say "Adiós, Jiha Village!"? Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann dub discussion
So I really dislike Kamina's voice. He sounds too much like a pretty boy. He has this sort of cool attitude that just doesn't mix well with him. I mean, he's cool, but he's cool not by being the suave type of guy, but rather the brash manly dude who does the impossible and sees the invisible.
Yoko is also one I don't really like. She sounds a bit older and more mature, but considering she's supposed to be fourteen that doesn't really click with me. I wonder how will the voice actress take her role during the second half of the series. But what's up with the sped up opening? Simon is fine. I don't have any complaints with him. Spoilers for the last episode: I really dislike the narrator's voice. He's supposed to be the wise, drilling teacher Simon, yet he doesn't seem the mystic type of guy who has already saved the universe. Last edited by Regulus Tera; 07-31-2008 at 08:23 PM. |

Not bad so far.
Except for Kamina, who isn't too awful, everyone else did pretty good. The english VA for Kamina just can't capture that original manly badassness of his japanese counterpart. Though, the change in the motto bothered me a bit. Oh, and if you guys think the sped up opening is bad..the closer is pretty much non-existent. Simon is practically running across the screen in it. Sad thing is, the secondary characters, fine
Simon, fine fully formed boota, fine Kamina, horrible and forget the sped up opening, where the hell is the awesome between commercial art

I didn't remember the commercial art being there until later in the series.
I think I really only like Simon's voice. I hope Viral is done justice. I'll admit it was neat seeing it on the TV, but it some parts just missed the mark, mostly in relation to catchphrases. |

Commercial art been there since day one. I love them pics. Missed seeing the dub, but I think I'm glad for that.

Well, I wouldn't say the dub was horrible, actually. It was mediocre, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, and the voices were pretty much what I was expecting them to sound like (I didn't have my expectations set all that high). Although some of the changes made me go "... wuh..?", it's still tolerable.
The reason some of the stuff was sped up (or removed) was Sci-Fi still has to make it fit into scheduling and what not.

for the sped up stuff, I know its a time thing. [AS] used to do the same thing, but thats the thing, they used to. Clearly it isn't nessicary, even if it was they should atleast keep it at one commercial so the show doesn't break at odd moments.
Plus it has some of the best opening and ending themes out of any anime. Not only was it sped up but they did that sucky mini-screen thing. So in addition to watching a tiny sped up version, we are also denied awesome theme music. The more I think about it the more I realize the perks to [AS] over ani-monday

It still cracks me up every time Kamina flips his gun around and tries to bash his way into the ganmen. Too bad the scene was interrupted by commercials for its tv premiere.
On another note, Now and Then, Here and There is an awesome show. I stuck around for it after Gurren Lagann and I'm glad I did. |

Crispin Freeman would have been the only acceptable Dub for Kamina.
I'd imagine something like his Straight Cougar voice, to be honest. EDIT: Also - wow, you guys weren't kidding about the speed up. Last edited by Truce; 07-29-2008 at 01:22 AM. |
