IP address conflict

I keep getting this message that pops up from the task bar

Windows - system error
There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network

What does it mean? Oh and when it does I often get connection issues. I'm guessing its something to fix.

I use a cable modem and a router, its wireless but the PC is wired to it. All other devices are wirelessly connected

I used to have this problem sometimes when WAAAAY too many devices were connected to one puny router. Like 14 devices connecting to a Linksys slated for like 6 or 8.

It started assigning the same IP addresses to different devices and things just got all fucked.

Maybe you are experiencing something similar.

well I only have about 4 devices accessing it, and I do not believe any of them are on

press start.

Select "Run".

Type "cmd" and hit enter.

in the new black window that pops up, type exactly this, hitting enter after each line:

ipconfig/all

ipconfig/flush-dns

ipconfig/release

ipconfig/renew

ipconfig/all

That -should- resolve any issues in your PC.

As you didn't clarify what OS you're running, I've assumed it is XP. If I'm wrong, just skip the run step, and type the cmd in the search window.

did that, and at the very least warning message seems to have stopped popping up, still seem to get internet lag from time to time though

It would be informative if not helpful to also log into your router and check out what IPs it is leasing to your devices, if it is set to assign any static IPs, and/or if its dynamic IP range is too few for the number of things connected (and more devices than your about 4 devices are connecting).

I had this happen a while back. Easy fix to it is to just restart the machine getting the conflict.

If you really want to be thorough, turn off all the connected devices, turn off and unplug the router, wait 13 seconds (I dunno why, but it's always 13 seconds to power cycle my router, and my friend discovered the same independently), plug in and turn on the router, and turn all the devices back on.
