Frieza was using a different attack, it was controllable but not as powerful, plus Krillian did come up with a way to throw a cluster of them.

Anyways I'm saying because narratively he cant hit anything. Because then it would be over in an instant. You need long protracted battles and energy beam clashes. Goku has to save the day cause its a shonen battle manga and he is the protagonist

I just want to continue to wonder if the presence of Mr. Popo is racist, or just a mythological reference I don't get. It's Japan so it could be either. Also amused that Bulma never felt comfortable around him, that whole learning to fly a Namekian ship thing was just rolling across the table with possible racism.

I suspect its abit of both. The design is probably taking some inspiration from perceptions of someone thats black, but it wasn't them going "this is a black guy".

Kind of like how Japan often uses christian terms and imagery but really has absolutely nothing to do with christianity. Its just easy short hand for Japanese to go "foreign and exotic"

Well he is a genie, so there's that. His appearance could very well just be an approximation of the human form without understanding the connotations therein. Kinda like trying to get a person blind from birth to draw a tree using only visual descriptions. Some details just don't translate.

Or toriyama simply decided to make him look like that on whimsy.

After finally watching Battle of the Gods, I couldn't help but feel like the point of this movie was to establish what is, and is not, canon now. In preparation for the new series.

So the first episode has left me feeling excited for what the show will offer. It almost went straight into what is/isn't cannon by a brief narration of the end of what was known as DBZ and letting the viewer know what many of the characters were up to currently.

It looks like only a few of the movies are really cannon, anyway, and we will definitely not be following the GT path. Which is fine with me.
