Seeing some of the crap I have in physics class, I can't argue the awesome power that is stuff falling incredibly fast from really high up. And the spear would really just pinpoint all that force to a fine tip. Okay, now I'm actually kind of worried about one of these guys getting me...

I'm calculating that if Dragoon has enough power to jump that high, he'd probably be even deadlier by just drop-kicking people.

Oh shit. Now I'm terrified. But I though drop-kicking was more of a monk/ninja thing?

You need to be a monk before turning into a lancer in FFT, so there's nothing wrong with that.

But if as the latest comic suggests they get the lifting power from air spirits, it's probably impossible to direct their jumps anywhere other than upwards.

The spirits just guide them to always hit. I'm guessing as long as he knows what he wants to target, the spirits will guide him to it. I'm guessing that if he actually aimed for a dragon that was in the ground he could just jump straight forward at it, but striking from the sky would be better for dodging the incoming attacks.
