on episode 4, those characters were originally first shown when Viral appeared in the manga. I dont know why they introduced them in a pointless filler episode

The manga ain't canon dude.

But yeah, pointless filler episode is pointless.

My second Gurren Lagann DVD set arrived. Gonna watch it. I must say I like how the colours for each disc kind of represents each character (red = Kamina, blue = Simon, light red = Yoko, light pink = Nia).

how is it not canon? Its what the anime was based on, anything not in the manga should be non-canon. Unless the manga is based on the anime, I think they did that with FLCL too.

Reguardless I do prefer how the manga did it

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann started as an anime project first and foremost. The anime was not based on the manga, but the manga was based on the anime.

They also did it with Neon Genesis Evangelion. Fun fact: the first volume of Eva was actually out before the first episode had even aired, as a way to make some fanbase for the TV broadcast.

I agree with that. However, I can say that some of the expanded universe material is great to read. For example, the novels, which explain just how exactly Simon managed to (episode fifteen spoilers) drill a hole in Lord Genome's chest. They also add a lot of substance to scenes that had to be compressed in the anime.

I didn't mind episode 4 on my first watching, but I've skipped it ever since then.

Actually, I usually skip 4, 5, and 6. 5 isn't a bad episode, especially once you consider that it sets up the second half's themes, but it's kind of dull and the fight isn't anything to get worked up over, so once is enough. I've given 6 a second chance, but the ratio of fun to recap, even in the uncut version (the only one I've seen) is skewed to much towards recap, and since I've usually just watched those episodes not an hour or two before it's just annoying ("Hey bro, remember that Rossiu kid?" OF COURSE YOU REMEMBER HIM, I JUST WATCHED THAT 12 MINUTES AGO, MOAR TITS).

There's absolutely no recap in the uncut version. You've been watching it wrong, sir.

Buh...but why would my completely legal viewing sources lead me so astray?

The subs are ripped directly from the TV broadcast version. Finding a subbed verson of the uncut episode six is actually quite difficult.

Just buy the fuckin' DVD. It has nine episodes (number six uncut) and all for twenty bucks.

If you aren't sure its uncut, do the Gimmi penis test. If you see his penis, then its uncut. Because if anything is getting cut, its that

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Gurren Gakuen-Hen (Gurren School Edition) will feature the cast of Gainax's robot mecha anime in a school in a parallel world in multidimensional space. As the character Kamina puts it, the cast will "enjoy school life" and "sweat under the glittering sun." Kabao Kikkawa (Queen's Blade -Rurō no Senshi-) will draw the manga based on a story by A-ji Zaitsu. Bandai Entertainment staffers have indicated an interest in acquiring the main Gurren Lagann manga, which Kotarō Mori draws in ASCI MediaWorks' Monthly Dengeki Daioh magazine, but they also noted that other companies are interested as well.
School life version of Gurren Lagann? Fuck yeah.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year olds life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.
