What. The. Crap. ((FF3 related))
okay, here's how it went down:
Playing with my team, my lead fighter sucked. ASS. he didn't land a hit the whole game through. so I changed his class to monk, and took away his weapons. he was still missing. his whole team died, and he was the only one left standing, at about level 4. suddenly, he hits. he deals 4390 with a (1x) appearing. I'm stunned, but 1 monster remains. so he hits, and deals ANOTHER 4390 (1x) what in the NINE HELLS happened here? I don't think glitches happen twice in a row... |

I had a similar situation in FF1. I had a monk early in the game equiped with nunchucks, who would deal roughly 20 damage each hit for two hits, while the fighter was doing two hits of 50 damage each. This was annoying, so I decided to un-equip the nunchucks. Sure enough, the monk now hit with three attacks at 40 each. Much better. Then, I discovered haste and that one attack-boosting spell. It was all downhill for the baddies from there. When fighting Chaos, the monk (now a master) would strike for 8 to 12 times per attack, doing around 4k per hit. That was one short and easy battle final battle.
Moral of the story, never underestimate a monk.

Making it happen.

A better moral: Naked monks = Ownage.
Monks are like the ultimate trump card of the early FF games. Their absolute lack of magic is made up by their ability to beat the snot out of anything that moves. Just watch out for heavily-armored enemies. For them, you may want to either soften their defense or pump the monk up even further.

That's probably just a glitch. I mean, if he was in the party the whole time, surely he would gain experience, right? Or perhaps it was one of those things where you deal an amount of damage based upon some crazy equation of your power vs. your enemies' power, kind of like all the bosses from FF5. That's all I can think of.

Well, I've got a few questions for you.. One, are all of your characters the same place in a row, or do you have any of them standing at the back. I mean, if you had this character standing at the back, it could explain why he kept missing until everyone else was dead. (As to the power of your guy's attackes, well I've never cared much for monk-types, so I can't comment.)
I suppose a status ailment could also explain some weirdness around your character, but I doubt you had one of those, did you? SWK

no status aliment. I keep them all in back row, since I learned it reduced damage. and I'm cheap. I did some reading, and I THINK what happened to me involved a freak coincidence, just as has happened to my fighter in a previous game. it's weird. It has happened other times with other people, usually just following a class change and frequent misses, or when all characters are dead. something about messing up the PWR score.
also, just because I want to mention it, I have an onion kid with a great bow at level 2 that deals 45 damage, and almost never misses. |

Time is something else.

In FF3, the back row is a bit different than later FF games. It protected them from attacks completely, as they were blocked from the attacks by those in front of them. The downside? They really can't hit with non-ranged attacks.
