Uhm...there's about a billion different viruses that can infect your computer, not including spyware and such. Just be really careful on the Internet, and you'll never get a virus or even spyware unless you are profoundly unlucky.
If you get a more serious virus, and I would consider your situation a bit serious, I would back up important files and reformat. Make sure to triple scan the backups, too. |

Damn, it's a good thing this wasn't posted in the Computer Help Thread. Then I might've seen this more easily!
I suggest following the steps in Chaosmage's sig here. Gaim is a useful alternative to Trillian, and I also suggest installing the Google Toolbar since it's got a good popup blocker, if you insist of using IE. But any other plugins or toolbars for IE are right out. |

heh...im again plagued by pop-ups on, of all things, AOL which has its own pop up blocker. But when I use IE or Firefox, I get no pop-ups . Sad thing is that these are "AOL" popups meaning when they popup they add on to the number of bars at the bottom with an AOL icon. good thing I'm getting rid of AOL in a few days for something a bit faster (DSL compared to Dial-up...FINALLY! :o )
Also, to help with your "virus" problem, you might want to check the programs list in "add/remove programs" for any unusual programs that you know have nothing to do with your computer such as "weird on the web" or "cool web search" which is a pain to remove because I dont think it shows up in that list.

However, what does Gaim vs. Trillian have to do with the OP's problem?

Because our preferences of IM clients differ, and thus what we both recommend differs. ChaosMage suggests Trillian, I suggest gaim in case they don't like Trillian.
