Default Supreme Commander ~ is bigger better?

I recently(today) acquired Supreme Commander and the first thing I noticed as I leapt into skirmish mode was the sheer size of the maps. I wasn't even on one of the large maps, mind you, and it was gigantic! GIGAANNTTIICC!

remember, this isn't the largest map available

Included are pictures for your perusal:

First off, the starting view, after I made a few buildings so you could get a nice idea of scale.


And then we have it zoomed out "halfway" to it's maximum zoom. Notice how the units gain icons as do the buildings due to their becoming so miniscule that you wouldn't see them otherwise.


And finally fully zoomed outness:

Dude, give me 5 minutes and I'll have my game out. 8 person, 1000 unit cap, right now on min settings, but I'll crank them up just for you

Also, that map, Finn's Revenge, is 20x20 km. The largest maps are 81x81 km.

i know. I tried out betrayl..or island betrayl or whatever.
Each island is like a 5x5 km island out of an 81x81km map. It took my sea units forever just to get to an island halfway up the map.


Oh..and i play skirmish with teams. Always have always will. I like having someone to help me out when I screw up badly. :p

I can't play on anything but min settings. Even though I reach their "recommended". I blame XP.

It's a pretty intense game. I'd slowly, very slowly, scale it up.

I'm playing Betrayal Island as we speak. zOMG intense. Building 4 Mavor's right now; I basically turtled in (4 teams of 2), letting my teammate keep them busy, while I pump my economy full of T3 power and mass fabs so I can support both him and my artillery.

Also, blatant lie on the screenies. Someday.

I made a unit called the Fatboy. It's so huge that when your gigantic robot is a miniscule dot on the monitor the Fatboy is still easily visible and recognizable. I then sent it running across half the map. holding down the shift button made me wince, as tha ttells you the ETA...and it was a huge ETA...easily three minutes. I think it was upwards of five or six.

I have learned that having units anywhere near the Enemy AUC or whatever the heck it's called...the construction robot that's also the command unit(As in, if it dies you lose) is not a good idea when it dies.

Why? Well..the creators wanted to make the explosions just as big as the maps appearantly.



See the black things along the left side of the screen? Those are the units that blew up the enemy commander. They're gone. Fifty units. GONE. In an instant. Blown to dust and debris. It also took out a huge chunk of the defenders.

Oh, and the circle red dot on the map is Fatboy. go fatboy, go fatboy.

Fatboy = mobile factory. Very useful in eradicating enemy side bases or establishing a forward firebase.

ACU's have a nuclear power source that overloads upon death. Know what's better? You can build strategic missile launchers (buildings) and missile subs (naval units) that can fire missiles that have the same area of effect. The downside? Every faction has a missile-defence building. My solution? Massive suicide runs of tech 1 bombers and tech 2 gunships to take them out, then nukes away.

Also, 3 minute arrival time makes you wince? I have 3 Fatboys on the way to various islands, ranging in time from 15 to 30 minutes. Now that is a wait time. However, I'm going to support them with sACUs as assault bots, with some T3 interceptors basing off of an Atlantis to take care of the air.

Good stuff. This one map is going to last days.

Also: You can never have too many factories or power plants. Mass fabs are good because you can toggle production, but that's only if you really need that extra boost.

PS: Chilling to Unkle's Lonely Soul while playing is one fucking weird experience, once you realize that there are exactly many humans as there are ACUs. Lonely soul indeed.

i've heard good things about supreme commander. things like "spirtual successor to Total Annihilation". ill definatly check it out one day.

Yea, I heard that this was made by the same guy who made Total Annihilation, which also had your commander blow up a good portion of your base, just like a nuke does. And this is on my "to buy" list. Just as soon as I get a job...that pays.

Oh and yes, bigger is better. I hate having games last me only 2-3 hours. If I'm gonna fight a war, I want it to last days if not weeks.

Well I started up the Aeon Campaign and I hit the second mission. No big, right?

This is an hour and a half into the second mission. Yes, one hour and thirty minutes. I'm certain you could complete it far far faster than what I did but I like checking out everything.

Anywho...check this out:



See the big flash of light in the upper left? That's the enemy commander exploding. And no, the mission isn't done yet. I still have 3 more objectives to complete.

But isn't that big ball of fire and light pretty? I think it is...

Also, while I haven't shown it the mini-map down in the lower left? Well, if you don't have a dual-screen setup(Yes you can go DUALscreen on this), the mini-map will let you watch another area of the map up close(As in, you can rapidly zoom in, zoom out, shift where it's looking).

I tried playing Red Alert and this game just ruins it for me. It makes me sad.
