Symphony of the Night is amazing, Marvel vs Capcom 1 was totally awesome, and Tenchu Stealth Assassins is the only Tenchu game worth owning. Your turn!

Monster Rancher 2, don't think I've blown more time on any other game. Damn that is addictive and hard and awesome. Gotta love Golems and Dullahans. So under appreciated.
Other than that my PSX collection is pretty basic, FFs 7,8 and 9, and MGS.

Hrm....what PSX games do I still play... FFTactics (well not anymore now that I have the PSP version) Blood Omen and Soul Reaver, Tenchu, The first Syphon Filter was fun (though the two new PSP games are better) and the Oddworld games were a blast. Oh and I replayed FFIX about 4 months ago.

Soul Reaver, Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill. Some of the best games/series of all time.

For what's worth, the ESRB just rated Final Fantasy VII for the PSN Store. That would be great, since I never finished that title.
That said, FFT > FFIX > FFVII & FFVIII. |

You know I honestly can't decide if I want another Soul Reaver game because it would be fucking rad, or if the series conclusion was awesome enough that I don't want them to fuck up the storyline for a cheap buck.
I must meditate on this.

ESSAY POWER GO!
Goddammit you've picked my favorite system of all time (Screw you SNES, I love ya, but PSX loves me more). Let me just go through the games I've clocked more than 100-150 hours on:
Final Fantasy 7 - Yeah, this one's a gimme. I was kinda on and off RPGs before this game, but if nothing else, FF7 got me hooked on RPGs. Don't know if it's still any good, but I mean, c'mon. It's like a rite of passage to say that you've played this thing. Play it and quit before the end of the first disk, just say you've played it. Final Fantasy 9 - A lot of the 'hardcore' fans give this game crap, but hey, it's got a main character that makes me giggle. I have memory cards dedicated to specific sequences in this game, including the one sequence where Zidane goes all Squall on us until Love Interest Chick shows up, heals him from his imminent death, and more or less says "Bitch, stop being stupid or I'll cut you." Final Fantasy Tactics - I absolutely LOVE basic multiplication, and this game is nothing but fourth grade math with tiny little avatars that swing swords and fling slightly-more-complicated-to-predict-damage spells around. There's even a Calculator, which breaks the game so hardcore it's not even funny. The storyline was fun because you played the person who never went down in history, and the game makes a point of telling you this before you even get to name the main character. Honestly I've probably spent more time on this one game than any other 2 games combined, ever, because if nothing else the team combinations are more fun to manage than playing the game itself is. Just be warned that the learning curve is a bitch and you WILL die in one of the first five fights; if Sweegy doesn't get you, Dortor will. Monster Rancher 2 - A game that takes advantage of the plethoras of CDs most houses had/have by creating monsters you could use to fight each other until something broke on one of them; usually their rib from my boxing Hare punching them at the speed of sound. Screw your Golems and Dullahans, Hares are where it's at. Digimon World 1 - It's like Pokémon if you only ever had one mon at a time, that mon learned moves the Blue Mage way (ie Get hit with it until it makes sense), dying was more than an inconvenience, and fighting battles was less practical for your stats than abusing the hell outta the training equipment. Also, Digimon poop and depending on whether you let them use the toilet enough will affect how they digivolve. IT WAS AWESOME. Too bad World 2 and 3 both went away from this, because I seriously had more fun with this game than anything Pokémon ever made, and that's saying a LOT. Digimon Digital Card Battle - Fairly basic card game with a rediculously cheap AI that makes it just frustrating enough to be a challenge without being so over the top difficult that you don't want to play... At least for the first half or so. After that, you have access to cards that break the game so hardcore it isn't funny (Okay, it kind of is. TAKE THAT GARURUMON! Second boss, and you're the toughest repeatable fight in the game! How's it feel now?), and I seriously find myself limiting my game-breaker cards so that it feels like there's a challenge left. Probably a personal preference, but hey; maybe you like Digimon and/or TCGs as much as I do. Wild ARMs 1 and 2 - Okay, I'll be honest, I've never beaten either of these games. The only chances I ever got to play them were rentals, and while I loved them, other games had higher priority on the rental scale (See below). Still, a lot of fun to play, if you like RPGs. Star Ocean: The Second Story - Lots of fun, with two main storylines right from the get-go. While both give basically the same story as the two end up traveling together from the beginning all the way to the end, you see different scenes from new perspectives on the second playthrough, not to mention you can recruit different characters. At LEAST two playthroughs are needed to see all the characters, it might be three, but I don't remember >.> Still, with a bonus dungeon that is BALLS HARD compared to the final dungeon, a BALLS HARDER bonus boss at the end of that dungeon who gives you a item to summon the suped-up version of itself, and then there's the 'Limiter Removal' for the final boss, who can literally kill the party before you have a chance to open the menu to spam the "DON'T DIE" button (ie the cure spells) that makes the bonus version of the bonus boss look like a wimp, and you've got a game that DARES you to be more awesome than possible. All in all one of my favorite RPGs, though I can't say the same for the prequel or sequels >.> Suikoden 2 - It gives you a villain you can thoroughly enjoy hating who gives you the single-most awesome boss fight in an entire series of games (His fight is up there with my favorite moments in videogames ever), characters that while shallow DO have something resembling backstories (Except the joke characters like the sea monster family or the fly9ing squirrels) and are generally fun to use, and a plot that isn't so much "LOL I SHALL SAVE THE WORLD BECAUSE I HAVE TO" and more "I'm saving this country because my homeland has become disgraceful and I'll fix it through making this other country overthrow the current regime." Plus, you get recurring enemies with motivations that are more than "HUR HUR YOU IZ ENEMY" and more along the lines of "I fight for the honor of my country, and I will NOT back down, regardless of the path it's taken," which I've always been a sucker for. All in all, a very fun RPG that has a dedicated fanbase for a reason. Harvest Moon: Back to Nature - If you've played one Harvest Moon, you've played them all, but if you haven't played a Harvest Moon yet, here's my favorite. It's a farming sim with a very, VERY minor dating sim mechanic thrown in (Seriously, all you do is pick up weeds and flowers growing up in the mountains, bring them to the pretty girl that strikes your fancy, and repeat until she's completely in love with you). Still, it's a lot of repetitive fun, if you can get behind that kind of thing. Till the fields, water the crops, feed the chickens and cows, cut down the ever-present weed pandemic, and then go to the local mine where times stops while you're inside and dig up all the valuables you can find, find time in the schedule to pick flowers for girl in town. Rinse, lather, repeat. The simplicity is its' charm; it makes you think you're accomplishing something, when in fact you're just doing the same damn thing every day. |
