Minnesota, 12th State to Legalize Gay Marriage

I've been kind of watching this for the last however long, and, because, somehow I ended up on my senator's mail list, I got this in my E-Mail yesterday.

What a great day.

Governor Mark Dayton just signed the marriage equality bill into law -- making Minnesota the 12th state to make the institution of marriage available to same-sex couples.

Franni and I couldn’t be more happy for our friends who finally have the chance to have their loving, committed unions recognized under the law. We couldn’t be more grateful to the legislators who stood up for equality, especially those for whom it was a difficult political vote.

And we couldn’t be more proud of every organizer, every activist, every citizen who worked so hard to make this incredible victory possible.

A year ago, we all feared that Minnesota might write discrimination into its constitution. Today, we can proudly say we live in a state where everyone can marry the person he or she loves.

It’s a good day to hug your spouse, thank an organizer, and be proud to live in Minnesota.

Of course I also heard from my family. My cousin's girlfriend proposed to her as soon as the news came through that Dayton signed the bill. Which is good, I'm happy for them. They were basically married already--living together for years, etc. Now they finally have the rights to go with it.

Honestly, I don't have a lot more to add. I'm just really glad this happened. And kinda surprised no one else made a thread. I hate making threads.

Point is, that it is possible to ridicule people for their stupidity and bigoted views without equating them with mental ilnesses or other such conditions, which contributes to an atmosphere of treating those with actual mental ilnesses as second class citizens.

On topic, this is pretty cool. Seems like lately a lot of places have been legalizing same-sex marriage.

Folks with actual mental health issues really, really don't deserve to be compared to Michelle Bachmann. She's a hateful fuckhead entirely on her own merits, thanks very much .

In other, nicer news, I seem to recall this is the latest in a wave of marriage equality rulings in several states. There's a lot of celebrating going on these days, and it's awesome that Minnesota finally gets to join in!

Quite the opposite, actually. Well over half the states have some sort of ban on it, and only twelve states allow gay marriage, along with DC and three Native American tribes. And on top of that, the Defense of Marriage Act forbids the federal government from recognizing any of those same-sex marriages, though the Obama administration is refusing to enforce that.
