Seil HMRWS - Starring Eli!

Okay, so... wow. I've never seen a Swedish horror movie before. I will say that this seems to be a drama with horror elements. It is also the best vampire movie I've ever seen. And I haven't seen a lot of vampire movies. (Everything that's come out recently has sparkling vampires, or "The Vampire Diaries" or "The Vampire's Long Johns" or something like that. This movie is different.

So The Cast has Kåre Hedebrant as Oskar and Lina Leandersson as Eli, and Per Ragnar plays Håkan, Eli's father. Peter Carlberg plays as Lacke, Ika Nord plays Virginia, Lacke's girlfriend and Mikael Rahm plays as Jocke, Lacke's best friend. (Man, spell check is screaming at me. I guess it doesn't like Sweden or something. Racist.) Patrik Rydmark plays as Conny.

In The Plot, Oskar is a twelve year old boy living in a Swedish suburb with his mother. It's never explained in the film, but it seems that his parents are living apart because of his father's alcoholism. School is a routine of bullying by a sadistic classmate named Conny and his friends - one scene deserving of mention is where they hold Oskar down and repeatedly whip him with a reed. This leaves Oskar pretty damaged, and he dreams of revenge - even acquiring a knife and developing a serious interest in murder, with a folder full of newspaper clippings about local deaths.

However, a young girl moves into the apartment next door and meets Oskar outside one evening. She tells Oskar her name is Eli, and they that they can't be friends. They quickly begin spending more time together, though Eli's "father" Håkan would prefer Eli not to socialize. Eli does develop a close friendship with Oskar, and convinces him to stand up to his bullies.

On a walk one night, Håkan drugs a passerby, hangs him upside down from a tree, slits his throat and begins collecting his blood. However, he's seen in the process and is forced to run off, much to Eli's chagrin. She later takes matters into her own hands and attacks a man herself - Jocke, Lacke's best friend. Håkan hides the body, but the attack is witnessed by a man living in an adjacent apartment who informs Lacke, who is overcome with grief and hatred toward "that little girl."

My Personal Opinion has been given above - this is the best vampire movie that I have ever seen, in my limited experience. When I say "vampire," I mean an actual vampire.

Myths and all. I felt a little bit uncomfortable watching it, because of the romance between two twelve-year-olds, but creepy works for a film like this. Maybe it was intentional. The actors (whose names I have trouble pronouncing/typing) all do a great job, and the few special effects that they do are well done.

Håkan does well as Eli's care-taker, and his role is played convincingly. He's afraid of Eli, but he has some measure of control through his job of feeding her. Oskar does well as the victim, and his fumbling attempts at making friends are just as clumsy as Eli's.

Final Opinion Not really a horror movie. There's a lot of focus on the relationship atwixt Oskar and Eli, with a few bloody scenes thrown in. Definitely interesting, definitely worth a look, (even if you can't stand watching a movie with subtitles) but it's not something to watch at a sleepover or a Halloween party. Worth a rental.

That is, yeah the best vampire movie ever. There's an American remake which, well it isn't bad but the original is vastly better. Shit is just creepy and is a kinda can't turn away movie.

Edit: also that is a fantastic movie poster there Seil.
