HMRWS - Starring Faeries!

Well... crap. I knew I had to get to this eventually, and being the last few days before the big show, I think we should start off with a bang.

Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark. Which is untrue, if you can believe it. You should probably turn on everything in your house while you read this. This fairy tale story is pretty Grimm. Written by Guillermo Del Toro and Matthew Robbins, based off of a teleplay by Nigel McKeand.

So The Cast includes Guy Pierce, Alex, as Bailee Madison's, Sally's, father, and his girlfriend Katie Holmes as Kim. But the film doesn't start with them, no - the film starts with Garry McDonald as Emerson Blackwood.

The Plot reveals that Emerson Blackwood owns a big mansion, where he lives with his servants and son in relative peace and quiet. Or he would, if his son hadn't been stolen by the creatures who live in his fireplace and demand the teeth of children for his return. Not having ready access to children, Blackwood turns amateur dentist on his servants, which ends rather horribly for all concerned.

Alex is an architect living with his interior designer girlfriend Kim in the Blackwood house, fixing it up and cleaning out the "mouldy newspapers and pigeon poop." Alex's daughter Sally comes to visit from Los Angeles, and in her opening scenes it's clear that she's medicated with "Adderal, I think." Alex and her mother thought a change of scenery would be good for her.

Sally is a little upset at the whole thing, and starts to hear voices. Voices from the basement. Voices belonging to people who want to be her friend.

My Personal Opinion? I was unsure of the whole thing before watching - I liked Guy Pierce from The Count Of Monte Cristo (however inaccurate it was) and popular opinion is that Katie Holmes was never an A-list actor. But I've discovered I've got a soft spot for children in horror movies - Regan, Andy and now Sally. There's just something about kids that makes me root for them when someone wants to... deface them. Sometimes literally.

Guy Pierce does well as a career motivated father, who tries with Sally but is a little out of his depth. Katie Holmes does well trying to ingratiate herself with Sally, while Sally is appropriately terrified of the aforementioned fireplace faeries.

Even though the fireplace faeries are kind of like the faeries from Hellboy.

Final Opinion is to definitely check this one out. It's generally creepy, even if it does his on some established tropes like grizzled groundskeeper who knows more than he lets on, or distant father, or kid who nobody believes but really sees spooky stuff.

Rent it and watch it with the lights off.
