Seil HMRWS - Starring A House!

I would totally watch a horror movie with Hugh Laurie in it.

This movie is directed by Stuart Rosenberg, with a screenplay written by Sandor Stern, but it's based off of a book - a true story - written by the Lutzs.

The Cast has James Brolin as George Lutz, Margot Kidder as his wife Kathy, and their three kids Amy, Greg and Matt played by Natasha Ryan, K.C. Martel and Meeno Peluce. Rod Steiger plays Father Delaney and Amy Wright plays Jackie, the babysitter.

The Plot starts off with someone shooting a sleeping family to death during a thunderstorm in Amityville. Later, the bodies are taken away after the crime is discovered. George and Kathy Lutz are house hunting, on a budget. They check out a place in Amityville valued at $80,000 and try to decide if they should buy such an expensive place. They're aware of the murders that happened there previously, but decide to buy because it's such a nice house.

As they work on unpacking and redecorating their new home, George finds a cross in one of the boxes. It's revealed that George isn't very religious, but loves Kathy, a catholic. She's asked Father Delaney, a local priest, to come in and bless the home while they're moving in. Father Delaney happens to come in while they're working, and decides it's okay to start his work while everyone is busy. The house doesn't agree, and politely asks him to leave.

Things start to go wrong. Amy meets a new friend named Jody that no one can see. The babysitter, Jackie, leaves the house a nervous wreck. George starts getting irritable, obsessed with keeping the house warm and the woodpile stocked. Everything starts to come apart.

Personal Opinion The film is pretty neat. There's a lot you can do with a haunted house, and while this is one of the most popular haunted house movies, it's also one of the earliest haunted house movies, and they've done some interesting stuff.

George's slow descent is great, Margot Kidder is lovely, the kids are pretty good - though some of Father Delaney's scenes are lacking.

Final Opinion All in all, it's a very good early attempt, even if there are other haunted house movies that are scarier. I'd say that this is worth a look for the seventies hair alone.
