Default Attention Snake! First look for Ducktales Reboot

May your fears be quelled for the first trailer for the new Ducktales has dropped.

I am also getting a serious Gravity Falls vibe from this, which is funny because when I watched gravity falls, I called it a modern retelling of the old Ducktales cartoon.

Fun

Lack of Darkwing Duck aside (seriously, what a missed opportunity if he never even appears in a cameo), I appreciate the following things about this preview:

A: The nephews have unique voices and appear to have semi-independent personalities for a change (instead of just finishing each other's sentences as apparent dopplegangers with identical voices);

B: Tennant actually impresses a fair deal with his Scrooge voice;

C: That last Launchpad scene and the "You're finally selling us" line to Donald shows the writers still have their sense of humor, and at least some of that humor isn't only aimed towards children;

D: They're taking Webby in a less sexist direction than her original characterization;

E: If anything, the art style and direction here is even more spiritually attuned to the original comics than the 80's animation.

Still, I'm concerned about Donald's heightened presence stealing some of the spotlight from Scrooge -- he really should just be a supporting, introductory kind of character to get the ball rolling at best. Also, I'm not really feeling how the animation style translates in some of the more action-adventure oriented sequences. One thing I feel like the original 80's animation did really well was capturing the beauty of faroff lands with a very vibrant color palette so you really felt like you were on an adventure and these colors feel more...subdued and washed out.

Regarding the animation, you can blame computers for that. They can try and emulate that feel of the 80's, but not truly grasp it.

I think it's a symptom of the "dark and gritty" styles that have seeped into everything these days. Honestly, the art tone doesn't bother me so much here. It makes everything feel like it has a slight sepia wash, which gives off that "old story" feel that I like from tales of exploration and adventure in ancient areas of the globe lost tie time.

Things I loved about this trailer:
- The Triplets having unique personalities
- Donald being a FUCKING ADVENTURER AGAIN!
- Launchpad was some classic Ducktales form
- I'm really feeling positive about the art style. It's a bold move and I'm enjoying it.
- Webbigail in general, but in particular her idolizing of Donald was fantastic for the advert.
- Scrooge didn't get a LOT of personality shown in the trailer but what we did see was really classic Barks style writing and I'm super duper into that.

Things I didn't like:
- Not Enough Scrooge shown in trailer, I was really hoping to get a stronger feel for his character and temper portrayal.

That's it, that's literally it I'm in love with this trailer. Also I hope Mike Matei takes a long step off a short stair for somehow thinking this isn't exactly the kind of show Barks would have loved to see.

I wasn't really a DuckTales fan as a kid, for whatever reason-- I preferred Tale Spin, Rescue Rangers (I was obsessed with Gadget as a kid) and Darkwing Duck. But dang, I have to admit this looks pretty promising. I agree that Tennant's Scrooge is actually really great.

And I agree with Snake that Darkwing Duck should totally show up in an episode or two.

Knowing that its David Tennant is messing with my head because I can't divorce the voice from my image of David Tennant especially from his Doctor Who run. He gets a bit too high pitched/ young sounding, but damned if it doesn't almost sound just like Alan Young.

I'm concerned about the shows ability to sustain what must be an overpaid cast. Nothing against any of the actors, it all sounds great, but these are all reasonably established tv personalities.

The Mouse Mafia is probably heavily invested in this series.
