Seil "Airplane!" or "Because VHS Matters, God Damned It!"

Here's the thing; I'm a hermit. My issues are broadcast publicly because I've got few close friends and feel the best way to connect with people is to be as public as possible with any potential friends Being as open as possible creates intimate bonds immediately, you know.

Anyhow, airplane travel is great. As long as you're not punched, or beaten, or held up, or held up in security because you're not white, it's all good.

My folks have recently had airline troubles (surprise) so I had them look at this. They laughed. That was y end goal, social anxiety and all. But then I thought about the best comedy movie ever, aside from all the other best comedy movies ever, Airplane.

Because currently airlines are coming close to their basic 1980s comedic standards or because assault charges are very real things, I wanted to talk about how nobody watches VHS tapes anymore, dammit!

I mean, I've got (literally) over a thousand movies and some of them are video tapes with tracking and junk and people are telling me to junk them.

Fah.

What vintage junk are you desperately clinging to because fart everyone else?

This was a true Seilpost... by which I mean I could not follow its progression at all. So I'ma just latch onto the very end. VHS tapes!

I literally work with VHS and other analog formats every day of my life. I mean, we've got equipment for 3/4 inch U-matic video tapes, Betamax, Betacam, 8mm/Hi8/Digital8, VHS-C, DV/MiniDV, DVCPRO. PAL/NTSC converters. VHS to DVD duping machines. Reel to reel audio, cassettes, 8mm/Super8 & 16mm film reels, slides, LPs... Pretty much the only things we can't do are pre-1970s video tapes and 35mm film reels. Also I guess we don't have players for RCA CED Videodiscs, though those were studio-only and not recordable. (Same with Laserdiscs, though that's digital already so I guess it doesn't count; but anyway it's a notable video format for which we lack equipment.)

So yeah, I work with vintage stuff in perpetuity. Because here's the thing: film may last for 100+ years if taken care of. Tapes only last about 30. All of the tapes from the early to mid 80s are starting to disintegrate. So if you've got any irreplaceable tapes, get that shit digitized ASAP, because you won't have much longer. (And hey, this goes for everyone: if you wanna send that business my way, I'll give ya'll a 20% friend discount.)

Bee-tee-dubs, if you need any of your VHS tapes restored, we offer professional tape cleaning (both included as part of our transfer service, but also stand-alone). Here's a video of the machine on Youtube. I've performed some goddamn miracles with that thing.

Not trying to hijack your thread with advertising (at least not beyond a basic "Hey by the way THIS"), just more putting it out there that vintage tech is great, but it ain't gonna last. Even the very newest VHS tapes will start to decompose in about 15 years.

Seil It wouldn't be a Seilthread without linkposting.
