bm casting call critiques
since the original bm casting call post is locked, I'm starting this thread for people to work together to post and accept criticism for their BM tryout.
to quote TLF: "To be honest, I don't see a real need for another thread on my end. Auditions are still pouring in on a steady rate and forum critiquing isn't a necessary part of that. Besides, Viper must be going crazy what with all these crazy posts. However, I do understand working with others in order to improve your own audition. I suppose that the existence of a thread would promote better work. If you want, feel free to start one- but don't be surprised if it's locked again (Why? I have no idea, the forums work in mysterios ways)." for more info about what I'm talking about, click this link: http://www.nuklearforums.com/showthread.php?t=548 well, i'll start...I've got 3 new files that I didn't manage to get in before the lock www.geocities.com/darkt0aster4.wav www.geocities.com/darkt0aster5.wav www.geocities.com/darkt0aster6.wav I actually used my compy mic for these since my nomad ii sucks for recording voice files (i had to use it for darkt0aster1 2 and 3 .wav)

An odd e-mail exchange between him and Scott of VGcats. Apparently, he has a history of insanity. |

I got a decent Microphone, I should be okay now. It's a "proper" music mic I got for 20 Euros (Most shitty PC ones are beterrn 8 and 16 at most and the 16 ones are usually overpriced or have some novelty feature like that Bendy Mic I once had that was actually decent quality until it broke from all the bending).
I'm gonna try some new stuf with my voice, I should be able to do my evil voice better with a better mic. |

So TLF asked me to review the submissions he's gotten so far, and he won't stop bugging me until I post, so, hi.
To be honest, the submissions I listened to were okay, but I didn't care for them. BUT that's most likely because I didn't care for CotMM's version of Black Mage when he did it. He's got this habit of cramming distortion and ambience into everything he does that I just don't care for, but it works for some people. That was the main problem I had. Other problems I noticed were different accents sneaking in (one guy was trucking along with a faux British accent and a little bit of Bill and Ted shone through). Another big one was a lack of enthusiasm, which I think Comic 24 provides a lot of opportunity for, especially when Black Mage introduces himself. If it's obvious you're reading, it's not working. When you're doing the lines, read them over, and get a good feel for them in your head. And you don't have to go CotMM's route with the voice-- Ed O'Neil was hired for Married: With Children precisely because he was the only guy in the audition that DIDN'T sound like Archie Bunker. Get a fix on the voice that you hear when you read the comic, and try to bring it to life. Me, for instance, I hear BM as a mixture of Ming the Merciless, Stewie Griffin, and Homer Simpson in equal parts. But that's just me. Do what you think is best, and who knows, maybe it'll work for the character. If your version is the illigitimate son of Paul Lynde and Carol Channing, hey, give it a shot. Anyway, good luck to everyone who's auditioning. I wish you the best. --Taco |

I'm going to post this quickly and be as succinct as possible. Some of you may wonder what TLF stands for. No they're not my initials. It stands for TACORIFFIC'S LOYAL FOLLOWER. Don't ask me how it turned out that way, the story is complex, suffice it to say that Taco and I go way back.
That being said, Taco is one among half a dozen people going over auditions. I consider his opinion to be very valuable and as such I'm going to go out on a limb and ask that people follow his advice if at all possible. To be frank, Taco could tell me "THIS is the new black mage" and I would literally close all the auditions in a heartbeat. I trust him that much. Soo...if any of you are truly looking for top-notch advice, post here, and hope that he has time to reply. |

What I'm wondering is how on earth you mix Homer Simpson and Stewie.

Alrighty... here was my one that was aiming for the original BM sound a bit. www.web-function.com/nyt/Nytdreamer2.mp3
and this one here I was aiming for... well... I was aiming for something different. www.web-function.com/nyt/Nytdreamer3.mp3 not sure if the "I am the black mage" line sounds as good that way with the un-sure stutter, of course I can always redo it however wanted. Edit: Wish I could do a Stewie/ Homer voice... that'd be sweet. |

Hey guys, I sent an e-mail to Antonio on Saturday requesting webspace, and still haven't heard back. Could it have been lost? I sent it from seanf@bendcable.com. I'll post mine as soon as I get somewhere to host it.

cheap angelfire accounts don't work. I tried it and they catch on pretty quick when you have 2 mp3's, a wav and no web page. Try going to bravenet.com. For those of you still interested in critiquing me I am at http://dragonglove.bravehost.com/Dragonglove.wav
Also I have a question for TLF. I thought I heard you say something about the fans helping choose the new BM. Does that mean we get to listen to the top 20 people and have a nice little democratic vote? |
