Nuklear Age, review and questions...
Firstly, I loved the book. It was funny when it needed to be funny, and it was moving and dramatic when you wanted it to be. I love the fact that almost every chapter had at least one, if not many zings to pop culture/movies that I like.
The switch between Dr. Genius and Dr. Menace was one deftly done, sir, it's one of my favorite parts of the book. I still don't like Menace that much, but I hate Genius, and I actually think that (And I might be wrong) Menace will come away from her anarchy ways eventually. Why? You ask. Why do I want Menace to find better ways to fell evil governments? Because of what she did for Rachel, and how she treated Atomik Lad during the Superion thing. Of course, it was in her best intrest blah de blah, but it felt personal when she saved Rachel. She thought about it in her own cold manner, but that wasn't what truly pushed her over the edge. Well, not in this optimist's opinion anyway. I loved the ending, though I thought I would hate you forever for killing Rachel. I did know it was coming, I kinda caught on to the cult leader's screaming in the middle of the book. While I liked it, the end gave me a few questions: 1) Nihel says that Arel is fateless. Yet everyone (gods) are bound by fate. This means that Arel's father was fated to have a child that was not bound. But he also says he made sure to hide the boy from Fate. How can you hide something from that which you are bound to, and doesn't this still make them all chained up? 2) Nuklear Man lists Shiro among the lost, but he isn't, he's quoting Nietchze (sp?)on top of a roof somewhere. Did I miss something? 3) That telepathy chick? What was the point? Was it just to show what a bitch Genius was? 4) During the huge crab scene, Atomik Lad has trouble turning on his powers. The shield won't come up when he wants it to. Yet after this fight, the only trouble he has with it is that it comes on when he doesn't want it to. i.e. when Rachel wants to get jiggy with it. Why is this? 5) Where can I get a Kat like that???? Favorite quote so far: "Well yeah I guess you got me right where you wa-NOVA BEAM!" In conclusion, thanks for writing a great book. I know you worked hard at it, and I think it shows. Last edited by Moridin; 01-18-2005 at 04:07 AM. |

I think the answer to 3) is I'm not sure, but if Brian was planning on creating Atomik Age from the start (which, looking at the ending, he was), then my theory is that he created her as an enemy in the second book. I only just finished it today (I've had it since Christmas, reading a chapter every now and then, but decided to read from page 400 - the end because I wanted to know how it ended, therefore deciding not to stop. Because of this, I'm still slightly... agast (sp?) by it all, and not thinking straight (as a teenage boy can't after 10 hours of straight reading).

1) One thing to consider is that Nihel is clearly a bit crazed when it comes to the whole fate/free will thing. That Nuklear Man didn't trigger the doom of the galaxy tends to show that he was unable to "break" fate.
2) I don't recall the specific incident, but Shiro is quite alive and well at the end. Maybe Nuke just thought he was lost and/or hurt at the time. 3) Psi-ko's role in everything has yet to be resolved. 4) The darn thing is just unpredictable. Emotional highs and lows affect it. 5) Aren't they all like that? |

5) Aren't they all like that? The answer is no. Some tend to attack everything and almost none can play video games better than most humans.

By the way, nice name with Psi-ko. Very creepy and forshadowy, now that I know she might be back. Plus a limp asian chick in space with crazy no gravity hair kinda screams that name, anyway. Thanks for answering my questions , and I'd like to go on the record as saying that most cats are evil and will someday be the end of humanity. And cat litter companies.

i want to say something on this whole fate thing, if one person is bound by fate then everyone is, because he will be fated to meet people etc, so it would also be their fate to meet him no matter what choices are made, because no matter what they choose, the other guy's fate will bring them together. So we either all have the power to choose or we are all bound by fate.
And will we ever see Nuklear Man/Arel again? |

I just finished reading the book a few minutes ago and decided to finally join the forums after two years of reading the comic. I'm sure Brian's sick of people saying how much they love the book but still, I loved the book. Btw, does anyone know if there's a project to turn it into a flash animation (like the eight bit ones) or even a comic? Not that it's not awesome enough in book form, but I'd still like to see a few scenes from the book fully illustrated.
