final fantasy X-2, give it a seconed look
ok, so it was a few days ago..or week.. or something (ok, it took me awhile to remember what i was mad about). But Brian insulted X-2 ,calling it a dressup game. ok, he's entitled to his opinion, but its wrong. I own this beautiful piece of work, and while the charlies angel theme get's a bit much in the begining (as in wanting to burn the game and forget it ever existed) but in less then an hour of play I was hooked. so they use the word dressphere. does the word jobclass sound better, (yes) becuase thats all it is. And yes the main charecter has a few tomb raider moments, but they pass. the key to this game is the gameplay itself. I got passed all the cutesy stuff pretty soon after i realized how kick ass of a game it was. And thats what I'm saying any doubters should do. Play it then judge it. Becuase your missing a pretty good game.

Well take into account Brian didn't really like FFX all that much either. Meanwhile, I loved everything about FFX, and to me FFX-2 is not all that good (yes, I am playing it). THe battle system is like the ATB on crack, all jittery and hard to figure out whats going on. And right now I can't get past the feeling that the game itself is ruining what the ending of FFX had set up.

*sighs*
I just have no desire to buy that game (thouth I might rent it so I can have more solid ground on which to gripe about it). The FF series has been going downhill since VII. Also, the series has gone a long time without a continuous storyline, and I think breaking this pattern is a big mistake, because square made some excellent storylines and put it all into one game instead of stretching it out in a multi-game ploy to get money. Woohoo graphics. Woohoo lots of scantly-clad women rendered in 3D. These don't make a quality game. If this game is just like FFX, I don't think i'll miss this one's passing through the "oh look this game is new and cool for only about 8 months" phase. I'd rather play some 2D FF-preVII-esque nostalgia game on the PS2 with a huge@$$ great story (since that'd fit on a PS2 disc) and great game mechanics like those done before VIII. I still enjoy myself playing FF I-VII games through for the umpteenth time more than I do playing IX and X for the first (I'm close to refusing to finish them, for I dislike them so)
That said, I'll still rent the game sometime, but i'm not going to get my hopes up. That game is going to have to be pretty amazing to sway my opinion. On a side note, why the @#$%^ did square have to mess up the Secret of Mana series? the US SNES one and it's Japanese sequel were great, the PS one was favorible to torture, and the one for GBA doesn't look that promising. The SNES games had MULTIPLAYER in and out of combat, all in REAL-TIME (this being indescribably awesome feature for an RPG)...why did this not catch on or continue in the series or any other good RPG?

I gave it a chance--played it, beat it, and still don't like it. IMO, it was ridiculously easy to the point of frustration with no real plot. Vegnagun? No. Just...no. While I thought the battle system was cool in allowing it to be active instead of full-fledged turn-based, and the dresspheres were interesting, I really enjoyed being able to switch out characters (and weapons) during battle in FFX.

I dunno, I'm enjoying it thus far. The battle pacing takes some getting used to, though I think there's a lot less strategy involved. In most battles, you just need to physical attackers and a white mage, hold down the X button and wait 'til the battle ends. That, and the soundtrack are my only real complaints; The presentation and overall mood of the game is a lot different than anything they've done in the past, but all in all it's a pretty fun game, I'd say.

I loved FFX. I tried FFX2 but I just couldn't stand the first ten minutes of it. I read the FAQs and everythign and the plot just sounds... sad. Rikku with dual knives theoretically overcomes any fault in a game but... :'-(

I love the game, but it pisses me off when I miss a side-quest that I can't make up ever. I missed two dress-spheres that I can't ever get. Grrr. Oh well, that's what game+ is for.

the advertising campaign in north america is very misleading, makes the game look like a dressup game, what with the teeny pop theme song and all.
and they couldve made the battles so stinking hard, that there wouldve been only one way to beat them, and everyone would die till they figured it out.....but thats more boring and annoying than mashing x. |

What happened to a good real time battle in an RPG (none of this stand around and choose options stuff be it active or passive)?
in realtime youd' run around, try not to get hit while slashing away (but never to the point of button mashing, the timing of strikes was above that) also for magic or item use you'd just pop open a menu, pick a spell, pick the target, and there it goes, still in real time with a slight lapse. (SoM is the best example) all of this was done while keeping the main elements of an RPG such as a very deep character development, breaks for dialogue and story progression, etc. (though in VERY few games, multiplayer in this condition was a nice touch). I swear I've been spoiled by SoM and it's Jap. sequel. But to keep this somewhat on topic, there's been very few GOOD ads for video games lately. Also, how linear X was really bugged me, sure you'd be able to run around at times, but the storyline seemed like it was always step 1: leave point A step 2: go to point B step 3: wait for scripted even to take place step 4: go to step 1 or 5 (optional) optional step 5: maybe do a side quest in same fashion or explore a town then go to step 1 beat the game. oh, and a little character development too. though learning more about the history of some of these people would be nice " (i'm sure X2 isn't much different, as it is an actual sequel...curse SquareEnix and their tradition breaking ways...curse them) ...maybe a branching story wouldn't hurt future RPGs. Have different ways of accomplishing your task and the like.
